Intervention

Cambridge Primary School recognises that each child is special in some way and some children have particular special needs which must be catered for.  Throughout the year parents and teachers have an opportunity to refer children to our school psychologist or speech pathologist for assessment and counselling.  Referral of children can be made in the following categories:

· Cognitive Assessments

· Speech assessments – articulation, expressive and receptive language

· Individual counselling

· Behaviour – including school refusal, anger management etc

· Assessment of Giftedness

Once the assessment has taken place a report is generated by either the school psychologist or speech pathologist.  The report normally lists a series of recommendations which both the parent and the school are to address.  At times these assessments lead to the possibility of funding under the Program for Students with Disabilities.  An application must be compiled in collaboration with the parents and any specialist personnel such as paediatricians, which clearly describes the childs individual needs and explains in detail how the school will address their needs through programs or staffing.  If the application is successful children receive funding and become part of the school’s Integration Program.

The Integration Program – consists of children who the Western Metropolitan Region of the Education Department believe fit the criteria for funding under the following categories:

· Physical disability

· Visual disability

· Severe behaviour disorder

· Hearing Impairment

· Intellectual disability and

· Autism spectrum disorder
